The human enamel organ contains amorphous and crystalline calcium phosphate, a small amount of apatite and amorphous calcium carbonate, while minerals with apatite crystal structure, such as fluorapatite and hydroxyapatite are only found in the enamel. Using transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), several researchers have observed and studied the mineralization process of ameloblasts and enamel matrix in the developing enamel organ. They showed that crystal nuclei in the secretory stage of ameloblasts appear as electron-dense foci, which are then transformed into rod-like crystals. They also found electron-dense vesicles in the apatite-laden enamel matrix, and calcium phosphate-containing vesicles in the enamel matrix are presumed to be precursors of the crystallites. These findings indicate that ameloblasts may synthesize enamel matrix components, such as enamelins, which are transformed to crystals in the matrix and which may be incorporated into the structure of the newly forming enamel crystals.Q:
